Catholic Life

Catholic Life at De La Salle

Our Catholic foundation is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which shapes the values and spirit of our school. Inspired by Christ’s example of love, compassion and service, we are guided in how we learn, grow and care for one another. We seek to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every pupil – whatever their background or beliefs – is valued, respected and invited to take part in the life of our community.

Faith is shared in a way that reflects the openness of the Gospel, inviting reflection, encounter and understanding rather than expectation. We encourage pupils to explore questions of meaning, purpose and values in the light of Christ’s teaching, helping them to develop a strong moral compass and a deep sense of responsibility towards others, especially those most in need.

The rhythm of the school year is enriched by the Church’s liturgical calendar, through which we celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. These key moments offer opportunities for prayer, reflection and celebration that are accessible to all, drawing us together as a community and helping us to encounter the living presence of Christ in a meaningful and inclusive way.

Our sacramental programme supports those pupils who wish to deepen their journey of faith, preparing them – alongside their families and parish – to receive the sacraments as encounters with Christ. This is always offered with sensitivity, respect and freedom, recognising the diverse faith journeys within our community.

Alongside this, we place a strong emphasis on living out the Gospel through service, compassion and social responsibility. Following Christ’s call to love our neighbour, pupils are encouraged to put faith into action, standing in solidarity with others and contributing positively to the world around them.

We invite you to explore this section to discover how the Gospel is lived out in our school, and the opportunities available for all pupils to reflect, belong and grow in faith and character.

Live Jesus, In our Hearts, forever.

Sacramental Programme

First Communion

At De La Salle College Jersey, the spiritual journey of our students is central to our mission, and Year 4 marks a deeply significant milestone as pupils prepare for their First Holy Communion. during the academic year, all Year 4 students participate in dedicated catechesis, exploring the foundations of faith, community, and the sacraments.  This program ensures that every child develops a meaningful understanding of this sacred step in their spiritual development.

This essential preparation is delivered in close partnership with the local Catholic parish, bridging the gap between school life and the wider faith community. The sessions are led by Deacon Nick, who uniquely serves both as our dedicated school chaplain and as a diocesan deacon. His dual role brings an invaluable depth of pastoral care, theological guidance, and continuity to the children as they prepare for the sacraments.

Following the completion of this preparation, any baptised student is eligible to receive their First Holy Communion. This culminates in a beautiful and joyous whole-school Mass held each June. This celebratory liturgy brings together families, peers, and staff to witness and support our young people as they take this important step in their Catholic faith journey.

Confirmation

At De La Salle College Jersey, the journey of faith continues to deepen into adolescence, and our Confirmation preparation program offers senior pupils a meaningful opportunity to seal and strengthen their baptismal grace. Each academic year, the college runs a dedicated catechesis course specifically designed to prepare students for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is open to any baptised student in Year 9 or above who feels ready to make a mature, personal commitment to their Catholic faith.

Throughout the course, candidates engage in thoughtful discussions, reflection, and prayer, exploring what it means to live as a disciple of Christ in the modern world. This preparation challenges students to take ownership of their spiritual lives, guided by the supportive framework of our Lasallian community. It serves as a vital space for young people to seek answers, build spiritual resilience, and understand the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Upon the successful completion of the catechesis program, eligible students are invited to receive the sacrament during our yearly Confirmation service. This special liturgy is a profound highlight of the school year, celebrated by the Bishop of Portsmouth, who travels to the island to shepherd our candidates through this sacred milestone. Families, sponsors, and the wider school community gather together for this joyous event to witness our young men stand firm in their faith and step forward as fully initiated members of the Church.

Worship Opportunities

Faith and worship are woven into the very fabric of daily life at De La Salle College Jersey, offering students regular opportunities to pause, reflect, and grow in their spiritual journeys. As part of the daily rhythm of the school there is daily prayer during house time, allowing pupils to gather as a community, ground themselves for the day ahead, and live out our Lasallian values. For those seeking deeper quiet and reflection, the college chapel hosts weekly Adoration every Wednesday morning before school begins, providing a peaceful space for personal prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. These regular practices are complemented by vibrant liturgical opportunities throughout the academic year, including feast day Masses, seasonal services, and voluntary liturgies that unite families, staff, and students in joyful celebration of our shared faith.

Student leadership in Liturgy

Student leadership is a cornerstone of the community at De La Salle College Jersey, empowering young men to serve as role models, voices for their peers, and ambassadors for the school’s core values. This tradition of leadership encourages students to develop confidence, responsibility, and a deep sense of civic duty. By taking on active roles within the college, student leaders help foster an inclusive, supportive environment where every individual can thrive academically, socially, and spiritually.

The Year 13 Leadership Team forms an essential pillar of the school’s liturgical year, anchoring the spiritual life of the college community. Throughout each term, these senior students play a highly visible and active role in leading full school assemblies, sharing messages of faith, reflection, and community unity. Their presence provides a powerful example to younger students, demonstrating how the school’s Lasallian values are lived out daily.

Beyond weekly assemblies, the team is instrumental in organizing and executing major liturgical celebrations across the academic year. From foundational feast days to seasonal services, these student leaders work tirelessly behind the scenes and at the altar to ensure each event is meaningful. Demonstrating a deeper commitment to the school’s founding mission, two members of the Year 13 Leadership Team sit directly on the Catholic and Lasallian Life Committee, actively shaping the spiritual direction and initiatives of De La Salle College.
