Although De La Salle College in Jersey was founded just over 100 years ago, the great history of the De La Salle College spans all the way to the late 1600s, with Saint Jean Baptiste De La Salle. Jean’s sense of vocation led him to choose to be a priest and started to get involved with organising schools for the street kids of France.
At the heart of De La Salle Jersey as an Educational institution, and fundamental to all that St Jean Baptiste De La Salle taught during his life time, is Jesus Christ. It is his teachings found in scripture which guide our way of living. Here at the college, we propose a way of life which we believe the boys will be able to follow and build throughout their lives.
The young men we nurture are outstanding ambassadors for the younger generation and invaluable contributors to the local community. The Ethos of the school creates our strong sense of community; the culture is one of caring for others, reaching for excellence by trying one’s best, and recognising that success can be measured academically and in a wide variety of other ways.
Jean-Baptiste de La Salle (1651 – 7 April 1719) was a French priest, educational reformer, and founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He is a saint of the Catholic Church and the patron saint for teachers of youth.
Struck by “the situation of abandonment of the children of artisans and the poor,” La Salle dedicated much of his life to the education of poor children in France; in doing so, he started many lasting educational practices.
He became involved in helping a group of schoolmasters establish schools to provide a good education for poor children . The schools were named Christian Schools. Together with these teachers, De La Salle founded a community of laymen which took the name of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (1680).
To this day, the Lasallian schools form a 300-year-old network following La Salle’s principles.
Today, the great De La Salle family is made up of more than 1,100 educational works, in 80 countries with more than 1 million pupils, including children, young people and adults.
Being a Lasallian means being a part of a rich network of contacts and opportunities. Our boys travel widely to visit and be inspired by Lasallian communities in Malta, Canada, Europe and the USA.
De La Salle provides a unique Christian education within a caring and nurturing environment. Our long-term focus on wellbeing and values produces excellent role models and individuals equipped to achieve their ambitions.
‘Indivisa Manent’, which translates into English as ‘Undivided Remain’, is both our motto and a core principle signifying our inseparable brotherhood; our boys work together and our community supports every individual in our care.
Our ethos establishes a culture of caring for others, reaching for excellence by trying one’s best, and recognising that success can be measured academically and in a wide variety of other ways.
