The most unique aspect of De La Salle Sixth Form derives from the teachings of our founder Jean Baptiste De La Salle in the practice of inclusivity. We happily teach pupils of all abilities: from the very high achievers and independent learners; to those who require extra support and guidance.
The support mechanisms in place for our sixth form students prepare them for the rigours of A-Level and our broad range of vocational BTEC courses. Here at De La Salle we have extra allocated teaching time per subject and personal tutors in place to provide each student with the best opportunity to achieve their potential.
The small class sizes allows teachers to develop a close working relationship which is the foundation of the pupil’s success. These small classes also prepare pupils for university, seminar and tuition groups.
Outside the classroom, our Sixth Formers have access to a plethora of opportunities and activities to complement their learning. From a full UCAS preparation programme and bespoke Careers support, to the in-College mentoring programme and our overseas vocational trips, there is something for all of our students.
With the extra demands placed on students when they leave school, we believe our Sixth Form allows our students to benefit from a balanced and supportive environment in which they can develop and seek new opportunities.
We offer a wide range of sixth form qualifications that meet the academic and vocational aspirations of our students. Subjects available include;
A2 courses are summative, requiring students to sit exams at the end of two years of study, while the BTEC Level 3 courses mainly comprise internal assessments with 1 or 2 yearly examinations.
By reputation, De La Salle will provide you with outstanding guidance and support. Our student-teacher teaching and tutorial ratios are excellent in comparison to any other sixth form provision. With small class sizes, you will receive targeted teaching, resources and support, particularly given the time that we can commit to each member of our sixth form community. We know you well, and we believe in your potential.
Throughout Year 12, supervised study lessons are timetabled to help with your transition into independent study. By Year 13, you can access the work spaces in your Common Room or the dedicated Learning Resource Centre, or work off- site in-between your timetabled lessons.
You will also have access to additional support from an experienced mentor; this may be provided to students who need help adjusting to sixth form study or to students who are seeking additional strategies to maximise their progress and attainment. Mentor support comprises approximately 15 minutes during one of your independent study lessons each week, and is adapted to your needs, whether to support classwork, revision strategies, completion of independent tasks, punctuality and attendance, coursework or time management.
You will eventually choose one of two pathways when determining your post-18 choices. You will either pursue tertiary study at University or through another Higher Education provider, or you will join employment, perhaps through an apprenticeship scheme.
If you are planning to move directly into employment, you will enjoy regular access to ‘Careers Jersey’ as part of our wider sixth form provision to discuss career pathways and opportunities that are open to you locally. We will help you to gain work experience in an industry or sector that is relevant to your interests. We will also provide workshops guiding you on how to compile your CV, mock interviews with local companies and opportunities to network and make useful contacts for future reference.
If you are planning to attend University, we will guide you on the selection of courses and locations that best suit your future ambitions. We will facilitate access to Admissions staff at a variety of Universities who will provide you with personalised tutorials focused on compiling an application, accessing funding and additional finance schemes, and functioning independently in terms of nutrition and mindfulness. You may also choose to take advantage of our dedicated University trip which is provided at the end of Year 12.
Your sixth form experience will comprise an impressive range of extra-curricular opportunities and activities. These complement your education with us, enriching your CV and further enhancing the life skills that you have been developing throughout your time at De La Salle.
You can access a variety of cultural and intellectual initiatives including;
You will take part in our Business Links Programme, attending workshops and talks delivered by local business leaders and taking advantage of work shadowing schemes. You will also attend tutorials delivered by business and careers experts to develop your understanding of the job application process, including interview technique and writing a Curriculum Vitae.
Furthermore, you will meet with University representatives to discuss post-18 study options, Mandatory Personal Statements, the UCAS application process and ways to prepare towards your next steps after sixth form.
We will invite you to take part in our Mentoring Scheme, using your subject expertise based on your sixth form options to support Key Stage 3 classes and work within a coordinated classroom role supporting the teacher. Participation in the Mentoring Scheme provides excellent soft skill development and further testimony to your application for future study or employment on your CV.
You may aspire to a role in our Student Leadership Team (SLT) which works closely with the Senior Management Team of the College. We promote individuals to specific roles with responsibility for ‘Lasallian ethos’, ‘Academics’ and ‘Pastoral’ to coordinate the sixth form leadership team’s involvement in the Student Council, House liaison, Parents Evenings, Charity, Rights Respecting Steering Group, and the Counter-Bullying Committee. The College has a commitment to the SLT to provide additional development opportunities ranging from E-safety certificated courses to public-speaking workshops and leadership and management training.
Sport at De La Salle of course remains important and our excellent facilities, including our fitness suite, and competition opportunities will ensure you retain a healthy balance of study and activity.
