Early Years

Pre-Reception

Our Pre-Reception is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm every day during De La Salle term time and parents may choose the hours which suit them and their son. The De La Salle Pre-Reception qualifies for Jersey Nursery Education Funding (up to 30 hours per week). Additional hours are invoiced monthly.

The Pre-Reception day is a balance of continuous provision – activities which are available for the boys throughout the day – and focussed activities led by an adult. The focus in Pre-Reception is learning through play and our curriculum follows the framework for early learning called the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Our activities include enjoying a “dough-disco” to develop fine motor skills and strength; using the trikes and other equipment on the playground for co-ordination; painting to develop hand and finger control; singing counting songs and rhymes; or collaborating with others to create a junk or Duplo model.

Whilst the timings of the day are flexible, the schedule for most days roughly follows the timetable below:-

  • 08:00 – 08:45: Arrival and independent play; “Before School Club”
  • 08:45 – 09:30: Outside playtime
  • 0930 – 1200 Continuous provision and focussed learning with adults
  • 1200 – 1300 Lunchtime and independent play
  • 13:15 – 14:30: Outside activities: bikes, trikes, climbing frame, outdoor investigation
  • 14:30 – 15:30: Continuous provision and focussed learning with adults
  • 15:30 – 17:00: Independent play - “After School Club”

Reception

The boys in our Reception class enjoy busy days with a range of fun, exciting and creative learning opportunities.

The curriculum has a clear focus on developing the boys’ knowledge and skills in phonics, reading, writing and number in a variety of enjoyable and engaging ways. Alongside these important areas, we also provide the boys a range of opportunities for exploring and experiencing the arts, science, geography, sport and games.

Over all this curriculum learning is our clear Lasallian focus on developing the social and personal skills of every child: for example turn-taking in games, independence in dressing, the ability to play in a team, showing care for others, the opportunity to make choices, an appreciation of how our actions impact others, and of course a sense of joy in the world. These are the personal attributes we nurture and develop in the boys across the College.

Reception is a place of joy and fun and friendship and learning.
