Learning Support

Learning Support Centre (LSC) Overview

The new Learning Support Centre is designed as a welcoming haven for students seeking a quieter, more relaxed environment during break times and lunchtimes. It offers a space where students can unwind, socialise, and engage in various activities away from the hustle and bustle of the playground areas.

The LSC is an inclusive and resource-rich space designed to cater to the diverse needs of students. Whether they are looking to relax, engage in fun activities, read, use technology, or focus on their homework, the centre provides a supportive environment to enhance their school experience.

Relaxation Areas

The LSC is equipped with beanbags and sofas, creating a cozy setting for students to lounge, chat with friends, or simply take a break. This calming environment is perfect for those who need a moment of peace during the school day.

Lunchtime Activities

A variety of engaging activities are available each lunchtime, catering to diverse interests. These activities include chess and other board games which can be played with other students, and craft activities for those who enjoy being creative, providing an opportunity to make something unique and express their artistic side.

Reading and Technology Resources

The LSC has a wide selection of books and magazines, offering students plenty of reading material to enjoy during their free time. Additionally, laptops are available for students to use, ensuring they have access to digital resources for both entertainment and educational purposes.

Homework Clubs

To support students who prefer to complete their homework within the school environment, the LSC opens its doors in the mornings and after school for homework clubs.

The SEND Department at De La Salle College

De La Salle College is dedicated to providing an inclusive education for all our students. Our primary approach focuses on delivering high-quality first teaching, ensuring that every student can achieve their potential regardless of their ability or starting point.

To support students with additional needs, we have a robust Special Educational Needs (SEN) team led by our experienced SENDCo, Mrs. Nina Jones. She is supported by a dedicated team of Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Centre staff, and subject specialist teachers who work collaboratively to support learning both in the classroom and in our Learning Support Centre.

Beyond academic support, we are committed to the mental health and wellbeing of our students. Our comprehensive support system includes:

  • Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs)
  • Our School-Based Counsellor, Mrs. Halliwell
  • External agencies, such as the Social Emotional Mental Health Inclusion Team (SEMHIT)

At De La Salle College, we strive to create an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) – Mrs. Jones

Mrs. Jones’s role is to oversee the support of any pupils with identified Special Educational Needs (SEN), ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to reduce any barriers to learning and that they are effectively included in school life. A large part of the role is also assisting teachers and pupils in the identification of SEN. The SENCo also applies to exam boards for any relevant Access Arrangements for exams.
