The Catholic and Lasallian Life Sub-Committee exists to oversee and promote the Catholic mission and Lasallian ethos of the school, ensuring that these values are evident in every aspect of school life. The committee provides strategic leadership and governance for Catholic Life, so that the school’s mission is reflected in worship, prayer, chaplaincy, curriculum, pastoral care and relationships across the community. It monitors how effectively the school embodies Gospel values and Catholic Social Teaching while maintaining a strong and visible Catholic identity through prayer spaces, liturgical celebrations, charitable initiatives and faith formation opportunities.
The committee also plays a key role in reviewing evidence, identifying strengths and areas for development, and supporting continuous improvement in Catholic and Lasallian Life. Through regular monitoring activities, feedback from pupils and staff, and engagement with chaplaincy and senior leaders, it helps ensure that the principles of faith, service, inclusion and community inspired by Saint John Baptist de La Salle are lived out in practice. The committee seeks to foster a culture where pupils can articulate and apply Gospel values, participate actively in prayer and service, and develop a strong sense of responsibility towards others, creating a school environment that is distinctly Catholic and authentically Lasallian.
The committee includes representation from Governors, school leaders, subject matter experts, Chaplaincy and students.
Mike attended De La Salle College Jersey before graduating from the University of Reading with a law degree. He subsequently worked at the Jersey Probation Service, achieving a master’s degree in social work.
Mike has been the Chief Probation Officer for seven years and chairs several multi agency panels focussed on the best interests of children , safeguarding and public protection. Married with three children, Mike has become a grandfather to three grandchildren and, outside of work, enjoys spending time with the family, walking the dog and maintaining an interest in all sports.
He attends St Thomas’ church and has been a volunteer at the St Vincent de Paul foodbank for several years.
A practising Catholic throughout his life, Nicholas places great importance on faith, family and service. Regular participation in the life of the Church has provided a constant source of guidance, reflection and encouragement, shaping both his personal values and his approach to leadership. He believes that Catholic education has a unique role in helping young people develop strong character, moral purpose and a genuine commitment to serving others.
Having lived and worked internationally across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Nicholas has been privileged to encounter people from many different faiths, cultures and backgrounds. These experiences deepened both his appreciation of the Catholic faith and his understanding of the importance of mutual respect, dialogue and inclusion. Whilst firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition, he values the richness that comes from learning alongside those of different beliefs and perspectives, recognising that these encounters strengthen communities and broaden understanding.
Tradition, heritage and community are also deeply important to him. He was christened by the same parish priest who had attended school alongside his grandfather, later married his parents and came out of retirement to officiate at Nicholas’s own wedding. This extraordinary link across generations reflects the enduring importance of faith, family and community throughout his life.
More recently, participation in Lasallian Formation in Malta provided Nicholas with a deeper understanding of the global Lasallian mission. Learning alongside colleagues from across the worldwide Lasallian family reinforced his belief in the vocation of Catholic education and strengthened his commitment to the values and traditions that sit at the heart of De La Salle College.
Nicholas is continually encouraged by the regard in which De La Salle students are held across the wider Jersey community. Time and again, people speak of young men who stand out through their politeness, respect, integrity and consideration for others. He believes these qualities are a direct reflection of the College’s Catholic and Lasallian foundations, where academic excellence is developed alongside character, compassion and service.
The five Lasallian principles of Faith in the Presence of God, Respect for All Persons, Inclusive Community, Quality Education, and Concern for the Poor and Social Justice continue to shape Nicholas’s approach to leadership and life. Whilst rooted in centuries of tradition, he believes these values remain every bit as relevant today as they have ever been, providing young people with a framework through which to navigate life’s opportunities and challenges, contribute positively to society and flourish as responsible global citizens.
Nicholas is proud to lead a community where faith, learning and service come together to prepare young people not only for success in school, but for lives of purpose, character and contribution. He believes that the enduring strength of De La Salle College lies in its ability to combine a rich Lasallian heritage with a forward-looking vision, enabling young people to flourish academically, spiritually and personally, while developing the values and qualities that will allow them to make a positive difference in the world.
Deacon Nick Le Cornu has served as College Chaplain at De La Salle College for the past eight years. His role is centred on accompanying students throughout their school journey, offering pastoral support, encouragement and guidance while ensuring that Christ remains at the heart of school life.
As Chaplain, Deacon Nick supports not only students, but also their families and staff. In a world that can often be challenging to navigate, particularly for young people, he seeks to provide clarity and perspective through the lens of the Christian faith. A key aspect of his ministry is simply being present and available, whether on the playground, in the corridors or in the College Chapel.
At De La Salle, the Lasallian philosophy is to “propose rather than impose”. Through his work, Deacon Nick promotes a life inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ, encouraging values such as compassion, service, faith and respect for others. He helps students to recognise that God is present in both the joys and challenges of everyday life.
Born and raised in Jersey, Deacon Nick grew up in a family-run hotel. He is happily married and has two children. His journey to faith was not a straightforward one. Having discovered the Catholic faith at the age of 30, he experienced first-hand the positive impact and transformation that a life of faith can bring. This experience has shaped his belief in the importance of “planting seeds” of faith, trusting that the values and experiences shared with young people can flourish throughout their lives.
In 2018, Deacon Nick was ordained as a Deacon for the Diocese of Portsmouth by Bishop Philip Egan. As a deacon, his vocation is one of service. Alongside his role at the College, he also serves the local Catholic parish and wider community.
Today, Deacon Nick brings together his professional experience, personal faith journey and commitment to service to support the spiritual life and wellbeing of the De La Salle community.
