This qualification is designed for you to learn how to create IT systems to manage and share information, study the role of computer systems and implications for personal and business use, explore the use of social media to promote products and business services, and study how data modelling can be used to problem-solve; the skills and knowledge are readily transferable and greatly value.
There are three mandatory units for assessment comprising ‘Information Technology Systems’ (assessed through a 120-minute written exam), ‘Creating Systems to Manage Information’ (involving a set task with a 5-hour allocation of time), and ‘Using Social Media in Business’ (assessed through an internally set task completed in your timetabled lessons). Your fourth unit of ‘Website Development’ (involving an internally set assignment completed during your timetabled) has been selected for its practical applications to support your future study and career aspirations.
This course will suit any individual with an interest in Information Technology and the desire to gain an excellent practical qualification for the modern workplace. You will need to be able to organise your time effectively and demonstrate commitment to your independent studies. Although no previous IT knowledge is assumed, the coursework element of the course will require a good level of practical competence. The assessed components also require good essay writing skills.
The teaching and learning phase of the course provides you with opportunities to develop invaluable employability skills in the categories of; cognitive and problem solving skills through development of critical thinking and practice finding expert and creative solutions to non-routine problems; intrapersonal skills through development of self-motivation, use of analytical thinking, development of a strategic approach and demonstration of vision and resourcefulness; and interpersonal skills through collaboration and communication with others. The focus on assessment throughout the two years of sixth form study provides a combination of assessment styles will play to your strengths and prepare you for any vocational study that you may undertake as part of a future career path.
This Level 3 course may lead you to a BTEC Higher National qualification in Higher Education within a computing discipline, or a degree involving computer related skills and knowledge, including Business. Students who have previously gained a BTEC Level 3 in Information Technology have, for example, progressed to HND in Business, BSC (Hons) in Computer Arts, BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance, and BSC (Hons) in Software Development for Animation. Successful completion may support your future professional career role in entry level IT, working as a social media specialist or web content developer, or as a business analyst.
